Scaling and Polishing in Gurgaon

Even the best brushing leaves hardened deposits (tartar) that only professional cleaning can remove. Scaling and polishing clears tartar and stains, treats bleeding gums, freshens breath and is the single most effective habit for keeping your teeth for life.

Our gentle ultrasonic scaling is comfortable - most patients describe it as satisfying rather than unpleasant.

Brushing removes soft plaque. What it cannot remove is calculus - plaque that has hardened into a mineral deposit stuck to the tooth, above and below the gum line. Once it is there, no toothbrush, mouthwash or whitening toothpaste will shift it. It has to be removed with instruments, and that is what scaling is.

It matters because calculus is not just unsightly. Its rough surface holds bacteria against the gum, and the gum responds with inflammation - the bleeding you see when brushing. Left long enough, that inflammation moves deeper and starts destroying the bone holding the teeth in. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and it is largely painless until late, which is exactly why it gets missed.

Polishing afterwards smooths the surface so plaque takes longer to build back up, and removes surface staining from tea, coffee and tobacco. Most people notice their teeth look brighter simply from having the stain removed, before any whitening is discussed.

How long it takes

A routine scale and polish takes 30 to 45 minutes in one visit. Heavy deposits or gum disease may need a longer appointment or treatment split across two visits.

What it costs

A routine clean is one of the least expensive things we do, and it is included twice a year in our Preventive Dental Care package. Deeper cleaning below the gum line for established gum disease is quoted separately after assessment.

Afterwards

What the next few days actually look like, so nothing comes as a surprise.

  • Sensitivity for a few days is common, especially where heavy deposits were covering the necks of the teeth
  • Some bleeding for a day or two as inflamed gums settle is normal and improves quickly
  • Brush twice daily and clean between the teeth - that is what maintains the result
  • Most people need this every six months; smokers and those prone to build-up may need it more often

Frequently asked questions

Does scaling weaken or loosen teeth?

No - this is a myth. Scaling removes deposits that cause gum disease. Any looseness noticed afterwards was already there, previously splinted by tartar.

How often should I get my teeth cleaned?

Every 6 months for most people; more frequently if you have gum disease or heavy tartar build-up.

Is scaling painful?

It is generally comfortable. Sensitive patients can be numbed for a completely painless experience.

Does scaling loosen or damage teeth?

No. It removes the deposit; it does not remove tooth. Teeth can feel slightly different afterwards because the calculus that was splinting them is gone, but the gum tightens back as inflammation settles.

Does it hurt?

For most people it is uncomfortable rather than painful. If your gums are very inflamed or the roots are sensitive, we can numb the area - just say so.

Will it whiten my teeth?

It removes surface staining, which often looks like whitening. It does not change the underlying colour of the tooth - that is what whitening does.
